Commissioned in 1942, HMS Scylla was one of the Royal Navys versatile Dido-class cruiser light cruiserswarships conceived to provide vital anti-aircraft protection to fleet units and convoys during the most intense years of the Second World War. Armed with the distinctive twin 5.25-inch dual-purpose guns shared with the King George Vclass battleships, these cruisers embodied Britains urgent wartime need for ships capable of engaging both aircraft and surface threats.

Scyllas wartime service was both active and hard-fought. She escorted Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union, screened Allied forces in the Mediterranean, and played a visible role in the Normandy landings in June 1944, where her guns supported troops ashore during Operation Neptune. Her career was cut short later that year when she struck a mine in the English Channelan abrupt end that underscores the constant hazards faced by even well-escorted warships in contested waters.
